Heavily steeped in the persistently shifting, electronic musical tradition of their native Berlin, Modeselektor have throughout their extraordinary career demonstrated an unswerving knack for transposing musical influences into a deliciously impure, thoroughly potent, sonic witches’ brew that makes as much sense on the dance floor as it does in a pair of headphones – while always being quintessentially Modeselektor.
For most music enthusiasts, the first encounter with Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary’s writhing, morphing synthesis of bass, techno, IDM and everything in between was a sort of musical epiphany where everything fell into its rightful place. A kind of ‘WTF-why- hasn’t-this-been-done-before-moment’, which made a lot of people (discerning critics included) rethink their relationship with electronic music. As if that wasn’t enough to blow our tiny minds, the prolific Germans’ two imprints Monkeytown and 50 Weapon consistently release the most hard-hitting and adventurous dance music out there from Dark Sky to their current co-conspirator, Siriusmo.
There’s a lesson to be learned in all this: Don’t sleep lest you miss the next Modeselektor heat.
